The thing I love most about my job is the opportunity to learn from others, which is exactly what I did when I attended a seminar on Mindset Training at Fitness Hub, a functional training gym based in Letchworth, Hertfordshire.
The theme of the seminar was related to health and fitness, the goals we set and the way we work towards those goals, but Caroline Ferguson, the Mindset Trainer usually works with high flying individuals, senior managers and entrepreneurs to help them unlock their potential and focus on success.
When it comes to working towards an end goal we’re our own worst enemy – convincing ourselves that we’re not good enough, that we can’t do what we’ve set out to achieve and let negative thoughts take over.
But what if you could re-train you brain to think differently? What if you were able to break down your end goal into smaller, manageable chunks that you can achieve, and celebrate along the way?
During one part of the seminar Caroline asked us a list of questions, asking if we were more ‘A’ or more ‘B’. Interestingly the different answers determined whether we were ‘carrots’ or ‘sticks’. Demonstrating whether we’re positive in our outlook and drawn towards natural leadership, or if we choose to follow the crowd, often at the expense of our own dreams and desires.
Luckily I came out as a ‘carrot’, which is great seeing as I run my own business, but you could see how easy it is to see and experience life in a certain way.
Caroline explained the mind and how it works in a simple yet effective way. She said that we have two sides to our mind; on one side a pleasure cat who likes you to do things that are comfortable, safe and pleasurable. The other side is the lion in the cave who only comes out when it’s time to fight and defend. Do what you love to do and you’ll feed the pleasure cat and feel warm and fuzzy inside. But faced with ‘danger’ or a potentially uncomfortable situation the lion awakens making you feel out-of-control.
Ideally we’d all strike the perfect balance to keep your pleasure cat happy while experiencing new things without awakening the lion in the cave, but it’s often easier said than done.
The mind is incredibly powerful and helps us create situations that are either manifestations of reality or made up entirely! The 60-minutes I spent with Caroline were really inspiring and I could see how beneficial it would be to work with her further.
Being your own boss has it’s highs and it’s lows, but with additional training and making adjustments to your mindset you really can conquer the world.
